Laura Sims to Teach Poetry Workshop at Poets House

From October 15th through November 19th, poet Laura Sims will teach a workshop on poetry and obsession at Poets House.The workshop will meet for a total of six sessions from 6:00-8:30pm at the Stanley Kunitz Conference Room at Poets House in Lower Manhattan. Registration for the workshop is currently open. Admission costs total $325. Interested parties can enroll here. 

According to the course description, the course will explore poets’ individual and unique obsessions. Its aim will be to successfully translate “that passionate interest onto the page.” Readings will include Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, Sawako Nakayasu’s The Ants, Takashi Hiraide’s For the Fighting Spirit of the Walnut and Harryette Mullen’s Sleeping with the Dictionary.

It is Sims’s hope that students will produce a “series of connected poems” in a “variety of forms.” Students will also investigate the roles of “lineation, perspective, and voice” in writing through their obsessions.
