Adrienne Rich, poet, essayist, activist, and feminist philosopher, died today in her Santa Cruz home at the age of 82. The author of more than thirty books, including The Dream of a Common Language and National Book Award winner Diving into the Wreck, Rich was one of the most important, influential, incisive writers of the past century. With her call to turn away from “lofty and privileged abstraction,” and instead pen the personal as political, she articulated a new type of poetry, one rooted in a specific, and often specifically female, queer body. Our loss is immense; she will be greatly missed.
