According to MTA, the Poetry in Motion program, cancelled in 2008, officially returned to New York City subway systems and MTA cards on Tuesday, March 27th, this time under the name of Arts for Transit. Perhaps you’ve already seen this quarter’s first installment, which includes the poem “Graduation” by Dorothea Tanning accompanied with artwork by Joan Linder.
The Poetry in Motion project is a collaboration with the Poetry Society of America. A new poem and art piece will be featured twice per quarter, making for eight pieces per year. Poems will appear in subway cars, at MTA’s On-The-Go kiosks, and on the reverse side of a select number of MTA cards. The New York Times City Room Blog also has a post regarding the history and the return of the program.
