Song of the Week: “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” by The Beach Boys

In September of 2012 I heard Pet Sounds for the first time. After running into M & E at The Modern, we decided to keep drinking at M’s apartment. The boys sang along and I acted shy but had really never heard a lot of it. I was about to move across the country to Boston, Mass and lines like “I’ve been trying hard to find the people that I won’t leave behind” and “I guess I just wasn’t made for these times” really resonated with me, in that moment, and even later when M went to sleep and E and I masturbated on the couch together I kept those words inside me. When I left in the morning I went straight to the record store. I bought the record. I went home. I lay on the floor of my kitchen listening to it until dark.
