President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Maya Angelou and fourteen other people yesterday. The varied list of alleged freedom fighters also includes former President George H.W. Bush, investor Warren Buffett and basketball legend Bill Russell. The medal is considered America’s highest civilian honor. It is awarded to those who make significant contributions ”to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
