The Yawp Barbaric
Jon Davis is a busy man. He’s the poet laureate of Santa Fe. He heads the writing department at the Institute of American Indian Arts. He dresses in costumes and assumes voices for readings. He launches public art/poetry projects.
And starting this week he has launched a 20-part series about poetry in Santa Fe’s local alt newspaper The Reporter. The series name comes from the poet Walt Whitman, who wrote “I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”
First up Davis focuses on Arthur Sze. He details Sze’s transformations over the years and discusses how “The poems both invite and deflect interpretation.”
Please check out the full column HERE because poetry in newspapers is pretty awesome.
